Beyond “Nonverbal”
Pure Tact, Verbal Behavior, and Heterogeneity in Minimally Speaking Autism

Some children can say hundreds of words—but rarely talk unless someone asks them a question. What happens when the therapist stops asking?
This presentation looks at why some children can say words but not use them spontaneously, and how we can help children move from answering questions to noticing, commenting, sharing, and communicating about the world around them.
We’ll explore a simple but powerful idea:
Can we teach children to let the world—not just the therapist—bring out their words?
And what can a child saying, “The sky is getting darker,” tell us about true communication?
